“The Prime Minster is John Howard, BHP has just pulled out of Newcastle and a young Pat Rafter wins the US open. The Year is 1997 and in a backyard in Perth a battler by the name of Mike builds his first Camper trailer and the brand we know as Pioneer Camper Trailers is born. Built from marine timbers on a steel chassis the design is rugged like its upbringing.
From these humble beginnings, Pioneer forges forward, before three men (Mike’s timber suppliers) Ron, Robin and Lester see its potential and in 2001 they take ownership, modifying the camper to a steel/timber body construction. Under new leadership Pioneer soon establishes itself as a tough off-road camper trailer capable of taming its harsh environment and bringing adventure to many across Western Australia and beyond. 2006 heralds a major design update, with the shape changing and new models introduced.
Fast forward to 2011 and the Baby Boomers have made caravanning and camper trailers a booming industry. Pioneer Campers is now an established name in the industry, with thousands of campers racking up hundreds of thousands of kilometres across Australia. But what is the future of Pioneer Campers.
Off the back of 30 years of steel manufacturing for Rail, Electrical and Military Projects, as well as its own successful service body division, Melbourne based manufacturer Actco Pickering is looking into entering the lifestyle sector and discovers Pioneer as a name known and respected in the industry, but in need of new direction. It’s a deal and in late 2011, Pioneer is moved to Actco’s Manufacturing Headquarters in Dandenong, Melbourne.
And so begins another chapter of new horizons for Pioneer Campers. With an excited Australia wide dealer network already in place, a Design and Development team with vision and passion, and decades of expertise in metal fabrication, we set about researching a new age in Pioneer Campers. What culminated was a new evolution in Hardfloor camper design. One that grew on the proven Pioneer qualities of the past while boldly stepping forward into the 21st Century. Two years on and the team embarked on its next big challenge, to take on an area of the Hybrid market and make it their own. The result was the Pioneer “Mitchell”, released in 2015 and named after one of Australia’s most famous explorers and a perfect illustration of Pioneers “In Front – Outback” motto.
And now 2017 is almost upon us, and so we look back on this 20th Anniversary at the Pioneer Campers brand, our history, and to the future of camping and camper related vehicles in Australia. We acknowledge, those who have blazed a path, we celebrate our Pioneer Family and our great fortune to be manufacturing campers locally, and we promise to keep living “In Front – Outback”
